Khabib Nurmagomedov’s 28th career win followed a familiar blueprint as he continued his reign as the UFC’s undisputed lightweight champion. Nurmagomedov faced off against then-interim champion Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 242 in Abu Dhabi and used his suffocating ground game to neutralize Poirier’s striking offense and secure a third-round submission finish. The Russian showed his wrestling advantage early when he brought Poirier onto the carpet and threatened to beat off the American. But Poirier, himself a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, realized the danger and was able to distract himself from the danger. However, Nurmagomedov remained chained to his opponent and dragged Poirier onto the carpet for the second time before the first round came to an end.
In the second round, Poirier appears to have had success with his punches at the start of the 2nd round, with Nurmagomedov backing up as he joined the flurry of punches. But after that first blow, his blows began to feel slow and heavy. Nurmagomedov did not miss the opportunity and again led Porier onto the carpet.
