Sam drew a line that was 3 5/6 inches long. If he drew a second line that was 4 7/8 inches longer, wath is the length of the second line?

Well if the second line was that much longer, you add the value of the first line to the second line SINCE the second line was THAT much longer.
Therefore 3 5/6 + 4 7/8 = 8 17/24 (total for second line)
