The answer is mRNA processing. microRNA regulate gene posttranscriptionally by silencing mRNA. microRNA is short (approximately 20 nucleotides) and base-pairs with mRNA during its processing hence interferes with its progression to translation by causing the cleavage of the mRNA or  shortening the poly-A tail
