Why might the author have chosen to say that Timbuktu “gained [a] fabled reputation”?

Timbuktu was considered as an African "El Dorado" because at first, it was fabled because of its gold (it was an important trading center in medieval times). Timbuktu became a metaphor for any faraway or unknown place, because of it's location and mystery.
