A turning point is a particular moment in history that changes the development of events in significant ways.  

The World Wars, at the beginning of the twentieth century, were turning points because they left remarkable scars in many countries who remained resentful and bitter towards others, which led to intense conflicts for the rest of the century, such as the Cold War.
