As a result of world war 1, what happened to the foreign colonies held by European powers?

Residents of the colonies were allowed to vote to determine their future. The Treaty of Versailles made it illegal for countries to have colonies. Germany was forced to give up its colonies to the Allies. The United States seized control of all of Germany’s colonies.
