w - 2 = -3

Apply the inverse operation to both sides of the equation. 

w - 2 = -3 
    Add 2 

w = -1 should be the answer

you want to get w by itself and to make that happen you have to get rid of the -2. you get rid of -2 by adding 2 on both sides:

w-2=-3
w=-1
