if ab=0, assume that a and/or b=0

factor
trial and error
(2x+1)(x+6)=0
set each to zero

2x+1=0
minus 1 both sides
2x=-1
divide both sides by 2
x=-1/2

x+6=0
minus 6
x=-6

x=-1/2 or -6
