We can plot the measurements of the position of an object as a function of the time elapsed since the experiment began. Time is usually the independent variable because we measure the position of the object at specific times, fill up a table, and plot the values in our X-t coordinates system. The time, being the independent variable goes in the horizontal axis, and the position goes in the vertical axis. An example is shown below
