Given :

Tom's family of 4 went out to dinner. They spent $46.40 for the meal.

They left a tip of 15% and the tax rate is 7 ¼% .

To Find :

The total cost of the dinner.

Solution :

Amount of tip , [tex]\dfrac{46.40\times 15}{100}=\$ 6.96[/tex] .

Amount of tax , [tex]\dfrac{46.40\times 7.25}{100}=\$3.364[/tex] .

Total cost of dinner , T = $( 46.40 + 6.96 + 3.364 )

T = $56.724

Therefore, total cost of the dinner is $56.724 .

Hence, this is the required solution.
