This is how I'd work it:

2(x-1)+3(x+1)=4(x+4)
     2x-2+3x+3=4x+16
              5x+1=4x+16
                    x=15

To check, substitute x into the original equation and solve:

2(15-1)+3(15+1)=4(15+4)
                28+48=76
                      76=76
