3(x−2)+5x=18
3x - 6 + 5x = 18
simplify
8x - 6 = 18
add 6 to both sides
8x - 6 + 6 = 18 + 6
8x = 24
Divide both sides by 8
8x/8 = 24/8
x = 3

Here's how I'd work it:

3(x-2)+5x=18
  3x-6+5x=18
           8x=24
             x=3

To check it, put substitute x into the original equation:

3(3-2)+5(3)=18
          3+15=18
              18=18
