You'd multiply 12 and 3, which is 36, then make up 2 numbers that equal 36. My suggestion is to divide it by 2, to get 18+18. Hope this helps!

Multiply each side
by  3 :                       3y  +  y     =  36

Combine like terms
on the left side:          4y             =  36

Divide each side
by  4 :                        y              =  9
