x + y = 52 (1)
x - y = 4 (2)

(1)-(2): (x+y) - (x-y) = 52-4
x+y-x+y = 48
2y=48
y= 48/2
= 24

substitute y=24 into equation (1)
x+24(1)=52
x=52-24
= 28

hence, x= 28; y= 24
