If we draw  the triangle we see that:

sin A = BC/AC and cos C = BC/AC, so as sin A + cos C = 1 :

BC/AC + BC/AC = 1

Multiplying through by BC:-

2BC = AC

So sin A = BC/AC = BC / 2BC
