The jobs Mother and Father have in The Giver that differs from our modern day society is that they aren't close to their children are we are, the kids were adopted (meaning that they aren't related by blood, 1 boy and 1 girl to each family, whereas in our world, we get to have as many children as we want) and that the families don't exactly "love" each other (because they have no emotions)
