If you're familiar with distribution, that's what you need to do first. 
1. Distribute 3 to (x+5)--- 3x+15
2. Distribute -2 to (x-1)--- -2x+2
3. 3x+15-2x+2=4
4. Combine like terms 3x-2x & 15+2
5. x+17=4
6. Subtract 17--- x=-13
7. ANSWER: x=-13
