After his political victory over Trotksy's supporters, Stalin proceeded to attack the opposition, smearing the memory of his former competitor and sending an agent to execute him. Stalin feared that Trotsky would make use of the power he had with the Russian army. The new soviet dictator persecuted, therefore, the opposition, in order to guarantee his hegemony.
