he has 75 pencils because 25 multiplied by 3 is 75. so he would have 25 pans and 75 pencils in order to have 100 writing utensils 
It would be if i get my calculations right you would find a number than times it by three and then add it to your starting number and that would be your answer. Hope this helped you find your answer.
