Why did president rosevelt feel so strongly about helping the British?

Franklin Roosevelt was extremely interesting in helping the British fight Nazi Germany because if the British failed, Nazi Germany would gain control of all of Europe (France had already fallen). This would mean that the United States would face an enormous and powerful enemy.
