What difficulties did immigrants face in gaining admission to the united states?

There were many difficulties. People were often racist, they hardly knew the language, they didn't have jobs or places to stay. Another problem was that the living conditions of detention centers were dreadful and they had to wait in them for a long time before they were admitted. Some lived in them for weeks before being cleared to enter.
