large = y

x+y = 6

x=6-y

6x +12y = 54

6(6-y) + 12y =54

36-6y +12y = 54

6y =18

y = 18/6 =3

they bought 3 small and 3 large

check 3*6 =18

3*12 =36

36+18 = 54
