Importance of stratification to Civil engineering are as follows:
- Provide an understanding of the nature of the ground
- Ensure properly structured site investigation
- Ease for assessing the permeability of composite soil
- To be able to know physical characteristics of soil/rock underlying the site
- Assess mechanical properties (i.e. strength, compressibility, etc.) of different rock strata
