f(x)=5x^2-2x, g(x)=x^2-x+5
(f+g)(x) should equal f(x) + g(x), so
f(x) + g(x) = (5x^2 - 2x) + (x^2 - x + 5)
Now drop the () and line up like terms side by side, then add:
5x^2+x^2 + -2x-x + 5 = 6x^2-3x+5
