Rivers help geographers understand how and where civilization develops is because most civilizations started out by rivers as they are a great source for many of the things we need. These things being water, food from plants and nearby animals. Easier transportation through water. New technologies are built over time based on the fact they use the river. irrigation is one majour advancement that allowed for easier crops.
