The colonists thought that the British were imposing on their rights to govern their own affairs, therefore causing resentment in the English colonies, coupled with other acts such as The Proclamation of 1763, Townsend Acts, Molasses Act etc. Many colonists felt that they should not pay these taxes, because they were passed bu the English Parliament, not by their own colonial governments, resulting in the phrase “no taxation without representation.”
