The Portuguese brought sugar cane with them when they landed in Brazil. it was not a native plant, so they did not begin making a profit right away. The Portuguese had to clear large amounts of land, which caused them to need to bring in many slaves. Once the crops started producing, it became very profitable and Brazil became Europe's main supplier of sugar.
